Shillong and Cherapunji

Next morning I am at the NJP railway station at 8 to catch a train scheduled to leave at 9, which eventually leaves at noon! The journey seems unending as the train finally chugs into Guwahati at 7.30 in the evening. I check into Assam Toursim's Prashanti Lodge. Amogh, Abhijeet and Narendra arrive a little later. Their flight to Guwahati was also delayed. As we make plans for the next day, we learn that its election day in Assam. The only option we have is to visit some other state. So we head to Meghalaya.

The lake just before one enters Shillong

We receive a thunderous welcome to Shillong - a hail storm! The rains and hailstones beat down on Shillong for an hour and then disappear as unexpectedly as they came! Late afternoon we ventured out to the main market square to figure out how to get around town. That's when a cabbie, Raja approached us. He offered us a good deal to show us around that evening and next day to Cherapunji. Raja was an entertaining character. Non-stop chatter! Good company

On the way to the Shillong Peak, he informed us that it had snowed up there earlier in the day :O

View from the peak and at Elephant waterfalls

Early next day we headed to Cherapunji. Went to the Duwan Sieng Syiem bridge, Wah Kaba Falls, Nohsngithiang Falls, Knoh Ramhah, Eco Park, Thangkharang Park and Mawsmai Caves. Wrong time of the year to be visiting the waterfalls though.

In the evening, we came back to Shillong and immediately left for Guwahati. The trip ended as it began - with rain!
